In the Mt Shasta Goddess Temple, Baba Yaga rules the month of July. An ambiguous entity in Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga represents the power, wisdom, liberation, and irreverence of the old witch of the woods. In this illustration she is shown taking a respite perched on a stump in front of a wizened old madrone tree, sack of kindling on her hunched back, and holding a long pipe to her mouth with a gnarled hand. A smattering of mushrooms...the aptly named "Destroying Angels" sprout on the path around her, and a patch of Devil's Trumpet looms in the foreground. A smoky skull shape wafts up from her pipe with the barest hint of a knowing smile on her lips. Her mysterious cottage is propped up on chicken feet in the backwoods, lit from within.
